A man in suburban Elgin had his makeshift homeless shelter shut down by city officials last week. Now, he is in talks to open an official one. Greg Schiller had been providing beds in his basement for homeless people who couldn’t get a spot in one of the local shelters. A story about city officials shutting down his operation in the local paper led to nationwide media coverage. Now, Schiller says a local business owner has offered to donate a building for an official homeless shelter. Schiller says he hopes to have it open by this summer.
