Chicago blues guitar virtuoso and vocalist Lonnie Brooks was laid to rest Monday at Lincoln Cemetery on Chicago’s South Side.

When the Louisiana-born Brooks appeared on the Chicago scene in the late 50s, many blues purists were not impressed. It took a long time for him to gain the acceptance that led to fame, but he secured his place among blues greats with the recording of his version of “Sweet Home Chicago.”

Brooks died April 1 at age 83.
