A fund started by the city of Chicago to support low-income undocumented immigrants is helping hundreds to explore ways to stay in the U.S. legally. Chicago seeded the Legal Protection Fund in December with more than $1 million dollars from unclaimed property tax rebates. So far, over 10, 00 Chicagoans have gotten screened to find out if they have a shot at applying for legal status, and about 450 people have gotten free legal help pursuing those options.
