Recent figures show Chicago paid out more than $14.7 million in overtime to paramedics last year. This and slow medical response times lead Chicago inspector general Joe Ferguson to call for the city to buy and staff more ambulances. Five ambulances promised for last year may arrive this year but paramedics say we also need more than 150 new paramedics for proper staffing.
