The Cook County Board is less than a week away from approving its 20-18 budget. Board President Toni Preckwinkle is proposing deep cuts. Preckwinkle planned on letting commissioners do most of the cutting since they were the ones to repeal her sweetened-beverage tax. But this week, she proposed cuts to make up the $200 million in lost revenue from the repeal. The cuts include eliminating about a thousand open positions and 500 layoffs, primarily in the sheriff’s, chief judge’s, and court clerk offices.
