Family and friends gathered to remember a young man who was fatally shot near his home in Woodlawn last week. A diverse crowd of hundreds of people, including members of Congress and former Governor Pat Quinn filled the Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago campus for Xavier Joy’s funeral. Speakers praised Xavier’s heart for service and working with school children. They lamented that he was a gifted young black man killed by gun violence. Some speakers charged politicians to do something about gun violence - that it’s not just guns that are a problem but a lack of investment in the communities.
