Homeowners Demand New Property Assessment System From Berrios

Housing activists are demanding Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios make changes to how properties are assessed in Cook County.

Some homeowners from poorer neighborhoods say their property taxes are too high. They say the way properties are assessed in Cook County are regressive and place more of a burden on poor people and people of color. Berrios spokesperson Tom Shaer says the system is slightly regressive but insists they do not grossly overvalue homes in poor neighborhood.
