U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson avoided protesters and the media on his visit to Chicago on Monday. Carson, a pediatric surgeon and Trump appointee, spent the morning speaking with staff at the Chicago office for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Fair housing advocates hoped — but failed — to confront him with concerns that HUD recently delayed an Obama-era rule to require municipalities to get serious about desegregating housing.

Carson also cancelled a scheduled media appearance in the afternoon.
