Uninsured Illinois residents have until Friday to purchase health care plans under the Affordable Care Act. For some, the options sting. Javier Torres, a 52 year old auto mechanic, went to choose a plan at a community health clinic in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood this morning. Even though he said he chose the cheapest plan, its premiums are three times what he used to pay, the deductible is up from $500 to $7,000, and the plan covers no portion of doctors visits or drugs. Torres says he hopes he can switch to a cheaper plan with better coverage in a couple of months.
