Illinois Legislators Aim To Restore Immigrants' Faith In Police

Illinois State Senate President John Cullerton is pushing legislation to rebuild trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement. The Illinois Trust Act aims to counteract troubling reports that some undocumented immigrants have stopped reporting crimes because they fear it could lead to their deportation. The bill would limit local and state police cooperation with federal immigration agents, and it would require local agencies to fill out paperwork that could help undocumented immigrants qualify for protected status if they are victims of a crime.
