Public Health Expert Says It's 'Mind Boggling' that Illinois' Public Health Department Waited 6 Days To Publicize Legionnaires' Outbreak

A public health expert says it’s “mind boggling” that Illinois’ public health department waited six days to publicize a 2015 outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease at a veterans' home in Quincy. Amesh Adalja is an infectious disease expert with Johns Hopkins. He says public health officials should be notifying the public immediately when it’s clear there’s an epidemic. An email obtained by WBEZ shows the director of Illinois’ Department of Public Health — Nirav Shah — says waiting days to send out a press release when they knew an epidemic was on their hands was in-line with their protocols.
