Allegations of abuse and neglect at state run facilities have increased in Illinois. A new report finds the inspection of those claims haven’t kept pace. In 2010, about 2,500 allegations of abuse and neglect were reported at mental health and developmental disabilities facilities run by the Department of Human Services. Seven years later, allegations increased by 50 percent. According to the report from the auditor general, it’s also taking the agency longer to investigate the claims. DHS officials say low staffing is partly to blame.
