The South Side Community Arts Center located in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood is now considered a National Treasure. The National Trust for Historic Preservation made the announcement today. The center has a rich history of providing space for black artists since 1941. It was part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s WPA arts program. The new landmark status doesn’t mean money but the trust hopes to guide restoration and raise the public profile of the center.
