Illinois State Rep. Will Guzzardi is proposing legislation to ensure people are not denied public defenders, just because they post bail. A WBEZ investigation revealed bail money is often borrowed and doesn’t indicate if someone can afford a private attorney. But some Cook County Judges were still using it as a reason to deny someone their right of a public defender.
