A Chicago couple recently brought their young child to one of the city’s trendiest casual restaurants and were turned away at the door with the excuse that restaurant wasn’t serving couples with children at this time. The recent case of the crying baby at Chicago Alinea’s restaurant caused a nationwide debate about whether or not children belong in fine dining rooms at all. But the attitude toward children in restaurants varies from restaurant to restaurant and culture to culture. We talk to author Mei-Ling Hopgood and Hopleaf Bar owner Michael Roper about different views internationally on whether or not kids belong in certain restaurants and how late they should be there.
