By Steve BynumTeenage climate activist, Greta Thunberg, dominated news headlines this week at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York. Addressing world leaders she said, ‘You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words…We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth - how dare you!’”. Governments across the globe must take “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society” within the next ten years “to stop irreversible damage from climate change,” according to a 2018 report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance is a collaboration of global cities partnering to “cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80-100% by 2050 or sooner”. They join us to discuss why they believe “achieving carbon neutrality will require radical, transformative changes to core city systems.”
