An apparent epidemic in kidney disease in sugar cane workers in Nicaragua

Jason Glaser runs La Isla Foundation, a group that supports workers in Nicaragua’s sugar cane industry. Studies show these workers suffer from near epidemic levels of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). After giving support to a new study on the high occurrence of kidney disease in sugar cane workers, some Nicaraguan government officials and sugar cane industry supporters implied Glaser was a drug runner. Also, La Isla Foundation has received numerous threats. Today, Glaser tells Worldview what happened. (Photo: La Isla Foundation).
