In the United States, people facing deportation can face indefinite detention or trial without an attorney.

ACLU immigration attorney Ahilan Arulanantham wants to transform the way the U.S. government approaches people facing deportation. Two cases Arulanantham is currently involved with could go a long way towards doing just that.

One would require the U.S. to provide bail hearings for people detained for six months. The other would require the U.S. to provided attorneys for unaccompanied minors.

Arulanantham was recently awarded a “genius grant” from the MacArthur Fellows Program for his work.
