Author Claims New Evidence In Oscar Romero Assassination Plot

The 1980 murder of El Salvador's Archbishop and liberation theologian Oscar Romero was one of the iconic events of the Cold War era.

Romero was assassinated while celebrating Mass. His death intensified a 12-year civil war that ended up killing over 80,000 people.

Pope Francis’ decision in 2015 to move Romero closer to official Sainthood was viewed, by many, to be as much a political statement as it was a spiritual act.

Human Rights attorney Matt Eisenbrandt says he has new evidence on the plot to kill Romero. He shares details from his new book, Assassination of a Saint: The Plot to Murder Óscar Romero and the Quest to Bring His Killers to Justice

Eisenbrandt is legal director of the Canadian Centre for International Justice (CCIJ) and former legal director for the Center for Justice & Accountability (CJA). He was part of a legal team that investigated and brought suit in the Romero case.
