Boris Johnson Becomes U.K. Prime Minister, Trump Offers To Mediate Between India and Pakistan

Boris Johnson will be the new U.K. prime minister after beating Jeremy Hunt to become the new Conservative leader. Johnson will take office on Wednesday. Current Prime Minister Theresa May announced in May that she would step down after failing to get her Brexit plan through Parliament. Johnson has repeatedly stated his commitment to leaving the European Union by the October 31 deadline, with or without a deal. Cabinet members who oppose a no-deal Brexit have begun to resign since Johnson’s win was announced.

Meanwhile, in the United States, President Trump welcomed Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan to the White House on Monday. Trump said that he would love to mediate discussions between Pakistan and India, indicating that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to do so. Shortly after Trump’s meeting with Khan ended, India rejected Trump’s offer to mediate and suggested Trump had mischaracterized conversations with Modi.
