Brazil is set to hold presidential elections on October 5th and the race is heating up. Recent polls suggest that with just a little more than a month left, Marina Silva, the presidential candidate from the centrist Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) is neck in neck with President Dilma Rousseff. Some polls have her in the lead. Neves, who grew up in poverty, only learned to read at the age of 16 but went on to become a successful environmentalist. Many Brazilians say they are ready for change and Silva would represent such a change. We’ll take a look at the candidates and major election issues with Brian Winter, the chief Brazil correspondent for Reuters and the author of several books on Latin America including Why Soccer Matters.
