Brexit Could Collapse Theresa May’s Tory Government
In the United Kingdom, Theresa May’s conservative government faces collapse after several ministers resigned in protest after the release of the most recent Brexit deal. Although May claimed to have the support of her Cabinet, Brexit secretary, Dominic Raab, also quit his post resulting in the British pound to plunge on currency markets. With only 134 days remain until Britain's official departure from the EU, May could face an internal leadership contest in her conservative party. We’ll play excerpts from Question time in the British Parliament, and Prime MInister Theresa May's press conference this morning. Then we'll talk about the tragedy and comedy of Brexit with with British writer and commentator, Edward Luce, U.S. columnist for the Financial Times. Observers, like Luce, attribute tumultuous issues like Brexit to the current political populist wave moving through the U.S. and Western Europe. Luce details his observations in his new book, The Retreat of Western Liberalism. He’ll also discuss his recent column on the murder of Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi and U.S./Saudi relations.
