New Tanzanian President John Magufuli is making some big waves. In a country where previous presidents have delighted in frivolous spending practices on personal perks, Magufuli is stopping the gravy train, going as far as to replace an expensive independence day celebration with a national day of service. Magufuli’s first few weeks in office have inspired people in Tanzania and beyond, sparking a hashtag called ‘What would Magufuli do?’. Northern Illinois Professor Kurt Thurmaier leads a month-long study abroad course for graduate and undergraduate students in Tanzania every other year. He’ll share some of the reactions he’s received from his Tanzanian friends, and talk about some of the challenges facing President Magifuli.
