Canadian Author On Why Canada Isn’t The ‘Progressive Paradise’ Outsiders Think
As populist movements sweep through Europe and the U.S., many view Canada as an ‘outlier’- a country where immigrants are welcome, diversity is celebrated, and climate change is taken seriously.
But Canadian journalist and media critic Jesse Brown tells Worldview that because of their reputation, Canadians have a “smug sense of superiority, which has only worsened since President Trump’s election.
Brown says Canadians have no right to their reputation. He cites numerous issues in his homeland, including the neglect of indigenous communities, high carbon emissions, an economy based on fossil-fuel extraction, and arms sales to the Middle East.
We talk with Brown about the darker side of Canada and his upcoming book, The Canadaland Guide to Canada.
