Syria’s government announced today that it will accept a proposed ceasefire with the major opposition groups but that it will still continue military operations against ISIS and Al Qaeda. We examine the outlook for peace with Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. The Escobal Mine in Guatemala is the third largest silver mine in the world and in the community of Santa Rosa de Lima, there has been broad local resistance to it since 2010. The community’s biggest concern is over the safety of their land, food and water. We talk with Llan Carlos Davila from the group Diocesan Committee for the Defense of Nature (CODIDENA) about their battle against the mining industry. Doug Cassel, a professor of law at the University of Notre Dame also joins us to talk about how the government regulates the mining industry.
