Chicagoans Help With Trauma Counseling In Christchurch
The March 15, 2019 mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand killed 51 people, leaving 71 orphans and 41 widows. The survivors struggle with profound, enduring trauma. Several Muslim counselors from the Midwest just returned from assessing how community members are coping. They found New Zealand’s support services unfamiliar with and unprepared for this level of trauma, finding cultural obstacles to providing care.Joining us are three of the counselors: Hadia Zarzour, Sana Mohiuddin and Donna Demir. The experience made them think deeply about the global spread of hate crimes and targeting of people in their own schools, houses of worship and places previously considered safe.
