A crackdown on prostitution, gambling and drug use that started with the detention of more than 1,000 sex workers in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan has become a nationwide sweep. The Chinese public has reacted strongly to the campaign on social media, using the hashtag “Dongguan, hang in there” in support of the detained sex workers. Kathryn Ibata-Arens is the Director of the Global Asian Studies program at DePaul University. She’ll explain why the government has decided to after China’s vice-related industries.
