In 2008, China was the first country to label ‘Internet addiction’ a “clinical disorder.” The government also claimed internet addiction was one of the biggest threats to Chinese teens. That’s according to a new documentary called Web Junkie. In the film, two filmmakers follow several teens and their families as they go through the treatment process at a boot-camp styled “rehab” center. Most of the teens in the film claimed they were forced into the facility against their will. Web Junkie ran at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Wen Huang. a Chicago-based writer and journalist and author of the books, The Little Red Guard and A Death in the Lucky Holiday Hotel, tells us why so many teens in China are addicted to the internet.
