In the dark, cold, Scandinavian winters of yore, epic stories called sagas helped keep ancient Icelanders sane. Today, with a population of only 300,000, Icelanders still produce more novels than any other country. A good book is the most common holiday present, and huge book markets are flooded with newly published novels each November.
