Defense Secretary Hagel travels to Japan and China
Defense Secretary Hagel traveled to Japan and China this week. While in Japan, Hagel announced that the U.S. would deploy two additional ballistic missile defense destroyers to Japan. Hagel explained the decision this way: “This move to significantly bolster our naval presence is another action that strengthens our alliance and increases deterrence against North Korean aggression.” During the visit Hagel also made comparisons between Russia’s expansion into Crimea and the ongoing territorial dispute between Japan and China over a set of islands in the East China Sea. We’ll discuss the trip with Harry Kazianis, the managing editor for The National Interest and a national security columnist for The Diplomat.
