Democracy's global slump

Throughout history, the middle class has been seen as an agent of global change. But how true is that? Even with the Arab Spring movements of the last couple of years, many leading indicators suggest that democracy is in fact experiencing a global decline, with the at least tacit approval of the global middle class.
