In the U.S. many consider it morbid to openly display dead bodies, but in many places and cultures, the remains of loved ones aren’t buried, but rather put on display or venerated. Paul Koudounaris is an author and photographer specializing in charnel house and ossuary research. His newest book, Memento Mori: The Dead Among Us, explores over 250 sites around the world where dead bodies play a role in the world of the living.
