Docademia-Films Giving Voice to Ignored Communities

In 2003, Iranian actress and scholar-activist, Nassim Abdi, emigrated to the U.S. to pursue higher education. She would then face the consequences of the September 11 attacks. As an effort to challenge stereotypes regarding immigrants from the Middle East, she used her expertise in film, social justice and alternative education to launch Docademia LLC.  A Chicago startup, Docademia connects filmmakers to educators, and university student-activists to drive social justice discussions in classrooms around the world. Abdi and Babak Shahmansouri, cofounders of Docademia, join us to discuss how their initiative uses the power of film to highlight stories of local and global underrepresented communities.
