Educating girls in Afghanistan

Sakena Yacoobi, founder of the Afghan Institute for Learning, is a role model to hundreds of thousands of young women and girls in Afghanistan. After the Taliban closed girls’ schools in the 1990s, Yacoobi and her group supported 80 underground schools for girls. Yacoobi and Kristin Lindsey, CEO of the Global Fund for Children, explain why it remains a challenge to educate Afghan girls.(Photo: Afghan Institute for Learning).
