No European democratic country has elected a far-right leader since World War II. This could change when Austrians vote in their presidential elections, early next month. They may elect Norbert Hofer of the far-right Freedom party. The party has an anti-immigrant platform. It’s also anti-establishment. Italy is also set to hold a constitutional referendum, next month. The vote could help push into power Italy’s populist, anti-establishment Five Star Movement. We’ll speculate on a potential domino effect with Maxime Larive, associate director of the European Union Center at the University of Illinois.
