The French press is being kept busy lately by a variety of controversial stories. The French tabloid ‘Closer’ published photos of president François Hollande on his way to meet actress Julia Gayet, and the resulting international press coverage has Hollande calling for a distinction between his private and public lives. Meanwhile, Jewish groups have spoken out against the ‘quenelle’, a gesture resembling an inverted Nazi salute that has been popularized by French comedian Dieudonné. Aude Raymond, senior lecturer of French at Northwestern and Eve Zuckerman, president of the French Club at the University of Chicago, will discuss what’s happening in la France du jour.
