The fair trade movement works toward sustainable development and community empowerment. A major way it does that is by certifying ethically-produced goods, both locally and abroad. At Chicago’s World Fair Trade Day celebration, we try some of the tastiest fair trade products: chocolates, breads and pastries! Chef Aaron Lindgren of ChicAgo ArtiZen, which creates hand-crafted chocolates, is Chicago Fair Trade’s newest member, but he brings decades of culinary experience to his business. We hear from him, as well as Shayna Harris, chief growth officer at Farmer’s Fridge, which sells fresh foods through refrigerated vending machines.

Also not to be missed is Evan Robinson, a philanthropist, organic gardener, MasterChef Junior finalist — and eighth grader! At the fair trade celebration, he is fundraising for the Dreamcatcher foundation, which combats human trafficking. The foundation’s executive director, Brenda Meyers-Powell, tells us more about the cause.
