On Monday, the president of the Philippines declared a “state of national calamity” as a means to speed up the process the government uses for delivering aid to the islands hit by Haiyan. But in many places food, water and medicine remain in short supply. UNICEF estimates that as many as 4.4 million children may have been affected. UNICEF says children are particularly “vulnerable” to both disease and “the chaos that has ensued” following the disaster. Casey Marsh, managing director of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF in Chicago, tells us about UNICEF’s relief efforts and explains the challenges of getting aid to those most in need in the Philippines.
