Global Activism: Coptic Orthodox Mama Maggie Gobran

It’s time for Global Activism, when on Thursdays, Worldview features people who want to make the world a better place. Stephen’s Children is an organization founded by Coptic nun Mama Maggie Gobran, dedicated to improving the lives of children living in central Cairo’s slums. Mama Maggie herself grew up in an upper-middle class Coptic Christian family and spent the earlier parts of her adult life working in a marketing firm and then teaching at the American University of Cairo, but after an experience volunteering in Cairo’s slums, left this life of comfort for one of service. She founded Stephen’s Children, named after Christianity’s first martyr St. Stephen, 25 years ago. Since then, the organization has built community education centers and schools, as well as helped over 30,000 families meet short and long-term needs such as basic education, literacy classes and medical services. Mama Maggie is being hosted by WorldChicago and joins us live on today’s show to talk more about her organization and life of service.
