Challenged by her Malawian friends to get involved in “the warm heart of Africa”, Phyllis Wezeman started Malawi Matters, Inc. Its mission is to develop culturally-inspired HIV and AIDS education in the southeast African nation. For our Global Activism segment, she’ll update us on some new initiatives she’s working on in sub-Saharan Africa, a region with two-thirds of the world’s HIV infections and three-fourths of the globe’s AIDS-related deaths, according to the World Health Organization. Wezeman is author of the book Through the Heart: Creative Methods of HIV and AIDS Education, a handbook of activities that enable children and adults to better understand the disease.
