The first writing of classical Arabic music was penned in the early Islamic-period by some of the time’s most notable Islamic thinkers, from the great political theorist Al-Farabi to Islam’s most famous philosopher, Al-Ghazali.

Classical Arabic music has evolved over the centuries, from traditional folkloric tunes to today’s Western-influenced fusions. Today on Global Notes, our weekly look at what’s happening in world music, Jerome and Radio M host Tony Sarabia talk learn about the evolution of classical Arabic music and the history of the oud, a Middle Eastern string instrument. 

Majed Abu Ajmia is a traditional oud player and composer who teaches at the Old Town School of Folk Music here in Chicago. Issa Boulos is one of the world’s leading Arab classical composers, lyricists and songwriters; he’s a lecturer and Director of the Middle East Music Ensemble at the University of Chicago.
