Rock and roll has always found a home around the world; from South Africa and Argentina to Thailand and Iran. China is no exception. Even with tight state controls over many aspects of Chinese society there is a healthy rock music scene in the country, sometimes just under the radar of the censors. This week on our Global Notes segment, we introduce you to an American, John Yingling. He’s spent the last year or so documenting China’s rock music scene; it’s part of a larger project that shines the spotlight on music from around the globe called The World Underground.
