Following the August 3rd mass shooting in El Paso that claimed 22 lives, the majority of whom were Latino, the song “Amor Eterno” written by Juan Gabriel and popularized by Rocio Durcal has become an unofficial anthem for vigils in the victims’ memory. Impromptu renditions of the song in parking lots in El Paso and in Latinx communities nationwide are appearing on social media networks, and during El Paso’s interfaith vigil on Sunday, a mariachi band led the crowd in an interpretation of the song.
