The man known as O Rei da Bossa turns 86 today. Brazilian legend Joao Gilberto’s career didn’t take off overnight; in his 20’s he was a heavy pot smoking, clinically depressed unkempt man trying to play his trade as a musician. It wasn’t until the mid-1950’s that Joao would start to experiment with an approach to his music that would create one of Brazil’s best known musical exports: bossa nova. This week on our Global Notes segment Morning Shift and Radio M host Tony Sarabia brings us the sounds of Gilberto.
