Chicago recently joined a number of major U.S. cities to become “sweatfree”. This means that the city government, by law, cannot purchase items, like apparel, from vendors that utilize “sweat labor”. But what are the rules for procurement by the U.S. federal government? The International Corporate Accountability Roundtable created the “Government Procurement Project” to analyze the purchasing protocols of the U.S. government. The initiative produced a report called, ‘Turning a Blind Eye? Respecting Human Rights in Government Purchasing.’ The group’s director, Amol Mehra, will detail the report.
