Hamburg, Germany is investing billions of dollars in hopes of becoming a global leader in urban design. Europe’s largest urban development project, the HafenCity, is expanding the city center of Hamburg, Germany by forty percent with mixed-use design on former brown fields along the Elbe River. HafenCity combines residential development with stores, parks, a school, and offices. The seven-year project is transforming an inner city island marked by waste dumps, industrial zones and public housing into vibrant and sustainable community living. HafenCity’s CEO, Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg, joins us to discuss the project.
