How Poor Internet Connection Produces Inequality

Last summer, the United Nations to make internet access a fundamental human right. But according to the Center for International Governance Innovation, as many as 4 billion people still lack access to the internet.

Those in the developing world who do have internet, face government censorship and corporate gatekeeping. Other issues include language accessibility. Meanwhile, recent studies show that the U.S. is 28th in mobile internet speed and 20th in public wifi speeds. This is mostly because internet in rural areas and on Native American reservations is severely underdeveloped.

To discuss global internet inequality, we talk with Stephanie MacLellan, a research associate with the Centre for International Governance Innovation.
