International Women’s Day: Former And Current Women Heads Of State Sign Open Letter Pushing For Women’s Rights

Today is International Women’s Day! In late February, a group of global women leaders, including current and former heads of state, signed an open letter, calling for government and private sector leaders to take legal and social action to promote gender inclusion and female empowerment. “[W]e see now … more movements gaining traction which seek to halt the gains made and erode the rights won by women,” the letter reads in part. “This regression is what fuels our collective effort now.” We are joined by Catherine Bertini, a signatory of the open letter. She is a Rockefeller Foundation fellow and a distinguished fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Bertini previously served as a United Nations under-secretary-general and executive director of the United Nations World Food Program.
