Los Angeles Times’ reporter Richard Marosi and photographer Don Bartletti spent 18 months investigating the conditions of laborers at Mexico’s mega-farms. They discovered that “thousands of laborers at Mexico’s mega-farms endure harsh conditions and exploitation while supplying produce for American consumers.” The farms supply the U.S. market, sending their produce to stores like Walmart and Whole Foods and chains like Subway. The laborers often live in “shocking” conditions, have their wages withheld, and there are also farms where children under the age of 14 are doing a lot of the picking.
