Islamic Republic of Iran established April 1, 1979

On February 11th, thousands took to the streets in Iran to celebrate and remember the birth of the Islamic Republic of Iran 35 years ago. Iranians celebrate that date because on February 11th, 1979, Iranian revolutionaries proclaimed that the regime of U.S.supported Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi was over. It was actually on April 1st, 1979 that the Islamic Republic was officially established by a referendum vote. Ahmad Sadri is an Iranian American and professor of Islamic world studies and sociology at Lake Forest College. He’ll take us back to what he remembers about the early days of the revolution and tell us where Iran stands today. (Photo: AP/Ebrahim Noroozi)
